About Obsessive Compulsive Disorder:
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health disorder that affects people of all ages and walks of life, and occurs when a person gets caught in a cycle of obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images or urges that trigger intensely distressing feelings. Compulsions are behaviors an individual engages in to attempt to get rid of the obsessions and/or decrease his or her distress.

Most people have obsessive thoughts and/or compulsive behaviors at some point in their lives, but that does not mean that we all have “some OCD.” In order for a diagnosis of obsessive compulsive disorder to be made, this cycle of obsessions and compulsions becomes so extreme that it consumes a lot of time and gets in the way of important activities that the person values.

------

I was diagnosed with OCD back when I was 13. I've shown signs of the disorder since I was very young and while my initial diagnosis was at age 13, the disorder got worse after I turned 17, when something very traumatic happened at home and my brain began to use my OCD as a way to cope with all the anxiety. I still struggle to this day to control my urges and even after 5 rounds of exposure therapy, nothings gotten much better. Many people think its just something you can get over, but its hard.

It also gets overly frustrating when people use OCD as an adjective. "Oh my god, I'm so OCD about it like..." No. Stop that. Don't act like OCD is just some kind of silly little thing. People with OCD sit here and suffer, battle excessive amounts of anxiety, fear and panic just trying to cope with all the compulsions and the thoughts that drive the disorder. If you're just mildly uncomfortable with a tile being out of place, that's not OCD. You're just a perfectionist, which is pretty normal for most people to some extent. Being a perfectionist and having OCD are two totally different things. Please don't compare the two.
